When families in the Alamo Heights area start searching for a dentist who treats more than just teeth, they’re already thinking differently about their child’s health. Parents today want providers who consider the full picture, from the foods their children eat to the way they breathe and sleep. Finding a holistic pediatric dentist near Alamo Heights means finding a practice where your child is seen as a whole person, not just a patient in a chair or a number on a chart.

Dr. Christi Wengler and our team at Wellness Pediatric Dentistry & Airway are proud to serve families throughout the Bexar County area, including those in and around Alamo Heights. As San Antonio’s first holistic pediatric dental practice, we take a distinctly different approach. Dr. Wengler is a board-certified pediatric dentist and a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and she brings a unique combination of credentials that few practices in the region can match, including a bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences, Certified Lactation Counselor training, and advanced airway-focused education through Airway Health Solutions.

What Makes Holistic Pediatric Dentistry Different?

Conventional dentistry focuses on diagnosing and treating problems as they arise. Holistic pediatric dentistry differs by taking a preventive, whole-body strategy, considering how your child’s oral health connects to their development, nutrition, breathing, and sleep. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases affecting children in the United States, yet much of it is preventable with the right early interventions and education.

At Wellness Pediatric Dentistry & Airway, we believe prevention starts with understanding. We take the time to assess your child’s diet, breathing patterns, and jaw development so we can identify and address concerns well before they become more significant problems. Since most jaw growth happens before age six, early evaluation and guidance can make a big distinction in your child’s long-term health and comfort. This window of development is one of the most important periods in your child’s life, and we’re here to help your family make the most of it.

A Practice Built on Transparency and Parent Empowerment

One of the core values that guides our care is the belief that parents deserve full transparency about what goes into their child's body. We use fluoride-free products whenever possible, offer biocompatible materials for restorations, and present all treatment options with clear explanations so you can make informed decisions for your family. We never take a one-size-fits-all approach as we understand that every child and every family is unique.

Our holistic dentistry method includes the use of PSP plates rather than traditional sensors for X-rays, and we prioritize minimally invasive techniques that preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible. We also offer silver diamine fluoride as an alternative cavity-management tool and use nitrous oxide as an anxiolytic option for children who need additional support during treatment. Every choice we make in the treatment room is guided by a commitment to supporting your child's natural development and long-term wellness.

Airway-Focused Care for Growing Children

Oral health and airway health are closely connected, and many childhood concerns, such as mouth breathing, disrupted sleep, and behavioral challenges, can have roots in dental development. Dr. Wengler integrates airway-focused assessments into our care model, using sleep questionnaires for children ages five and older and evaluating jaw development as part of routine visits. Identifying these patterns early gives families a real opportunity to address the root cause rather than simply managing symptoms.

Our airway orthodontics services are designed to address developmental concerns early, using palate expanders, myofunctional appliances, and Invisalign Teen options when appropriate. These treatments work with your child's natural growth patterns to encourage proper breathing and facial development over time.

Specialized Care for Children with Unique Needs

We understand that not all children have the same experience at the dentist, and we've designed our practice with that as part of our focus. Our special needs dentistry services are available for children with autism, sensory processing disorders, and other conditions that require a more thoughtful, individualized approach to care. Our private, quiet treatment rooms help minimize sensory overload, and our team moves at each child's pace to ensure they feel safe and comfortable throughout every visit.

For families who are curious about a second opinion on a previous treatment recommendation, we openly welcome those conversations. We believe that parents should feel confident and fully informed in order to make the best decisions for their children. Our team is always happy to take the time to review your child's history and offer our perspective.
