Tooth-Colored, Mercury-Free Fillings That Honor Your Child's Wellness

When your child needs a filling, the materials used become part of their body for years to come. At Wellness Pediatric Dentistry, we exclusively use biocompatible filling materials that are completely free from mercury, BPA, and other potentially harmful substances. Our advanced composite resins provide excellent durability and natural appearance while supporting your child’s overall health and development.

Dr. Wengler’s commitment to holistic care means every restoration is carefully selected for both safety and effectiveness. We use only the highest quality biocompatible materials that integrate harmoniously with your child’s natural tooth structure, providing long-lasting protection while eliminating any concerns about toxic exposure from dental work.

The Science of Safe Dental Restorations

Traditional dental fillings have historically used materials like mercury amalgam or composites containing BPA-releasing compounds in conventional dental sealants. Modern biocompatible materials eliminate these concerns while providing superior performance. Our ceramic-filled composites bond directly to tooth structure, creating restorations that are stronger, more durable, and completely safe for developing bodies.

These advanced materials not only restore function and appearance but also strengthen the remaining tooth structure. Unlike amalgam fillings that require removing healthy tooth structure for mechanical retention, biocompatible composites bond chemically to teeth, allowing us to preserve more of your child’s natural tooth while providing excellent long-term results.

Conservative Approach

Biocompatible materials bond directly to teeth, allowing us to preserve more natural tooth structure while providing stronger, longer-lasting restorations than traditional materials.

Gentle, Comprehensive Restoration Procedure

Initial Assessment and Planning: Dr. Wengler carefully evaluates each tooth requiring restoration to determine the most appropriate biocompatible material and treatment approach. This includes comprehensive examination of tooth structure and decay extent, evaluation of bite forces and functional requirements, assessment of aesthetic considerations, discussion of material options and family preferences, and planning for long-term tooth health.

Comfort and Anxiety Management: Every child receives individualized comfort care during pediatric restorative dental procedures in San Antonio. We offer topical anesthetics for gentle numbing, nitrous oxide for relaxation, local anesthesia using the most comfortable techniques, and children’s sedation dentistry in San Antonio for anxious children or complex procedures.

Minimally Invasive Restoration Technique: Our approach emphasizes preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible while ensuring complete removal of decay. Treatment steps include gentle decay removal, biocompatible preparation, isolation and protection, precise material placement, LED light curing, and finishing and polishing to create smooth, natural-feeling surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions About Biocompatible Dental Fillings For Kids

Why choose biocompatible fillings over traditional options?

Biocompatible fillings eliminate exposure to mercury, BPA, and other potentially harmful substances while providing superior aesthetics and often better long-term durability. They bond directly to teeth, requiring less removal of healthy tooth structure than amalgam. Our patients also appreciate that tooth-colored fillings are completely invisible — no dark metal showing when your child smiles or laughs.

How long do biocompatible fillings last in children?

High-quality tooth-colored composite fillings typically last 7–15 years depending on the size and location of the restoration, your child’s bite habits, and how consistently they’re maintained with checkups. Baby tooth fillings are designed to last until that tooth naturally falls out. Permanent tooth fillings, when placed with biocompatible composites, can last well into adulthood with proper care.

Are biocompatible fillings more expensive than traditional fillings?

While biocompatible materials may cost slightly more initially, they often provide better long-term value through enhanced durability, reduced replacement needs, and the invaluable benefit of complete safety for your child’s developing body. Many insurance plans cover these restorations, and we offer flexible payment options.

Can biocompatible fillings be used for large cavities?

Yes, we have biocompatible options for restorations of all sizes, from small fillings to large onlays and crowns. For extensive restorations, we may use ceramic-reinforced composites or all-ceramic materials that provide exceptional strength while maintaining complete biocompatibility and natural appearance.

How do I care for my child's biocompatible fillings?

Biocompatible fillings require the same excellent oral hygiene as natural teeth, using the natural, biocompatible oral care products we recommend. Regular checkups allow us to monitor restoration condition and provide professional cleaning that maintains their appearance and function over time.

What if my child has an existing amalgam filling?

If your child has existing amalgam fillings, we can evaluate whether replacement with biocompatible materials would be beneficial. When amalgam replacement is indicated, we use safe removal protocols and replace with the most appropriate biocompatible material for long-term health and function.
